Science in Fiction: For the Research Geeks in All of Us

This edition of Science in Fiction is going to be a little different.  I found myself procrastinating again, like usual, and having not written the article on 12/31 when I told myself I was going to post on the 1st of every month, well… you can see where this is going…

So, like I said–procrastinating, I was watching season 2 of The Librarians and, like usual, felt compelled to look up things mentioned in the show (namely, the Carrington Effect).  After discovering that I just might find myself without power for up to a year in the next few years because of gigantic solar storms, I stumbled onto a site that leaves my geeky, research-obsessed little heart dancing with joy.  It’s a scientific journal site called “Physics Special Topics.”  It’s rather brilliant.  It includes such topics as the ideal quantity of blood a vampire should drink to be efficient (and how long that would take), the maximum height heel Cinderella’s glass slippers could have without shattering when she walked, and what would really happen if Superman flew fast enough to reverse the rotation of the Earth.

It’s like a science geek’s nirvana!  It’s science fiction without all the annoying math!

Someone might have to remind me to come up for air…
